MOBILE MATH INITIATIVE (MMI)
Friday, November 09, 2007
The Mobile Math Initiative (MMI) is a research based

The focus of MMI is on sense-making

Whatever the activity, students are always striving to understand mathematics and be able to apply what they have learned in school or in daily living.  The key differences in math classes in MMI schools are the following:

  1. Students are actively engaged in the process of learning math.
  2. Teaching is centered on challenging problems.
  3. Students use tools and objects to model problems.
  4. Students justify their thinking.
  5. Students learn math concepts, not just memorize procedures.
  6. Teachers are constantly asking, "How did you know that? Did anyone solve it a different way? Does everyone agree?"

Fonde Elementary School will host a Family Math Night where parents will have the opportunity to participate in teacher led activities at math stations that reflect the components of effective math instruction.  The date will be posted a later time.
