The Alabama Reading Initiative is a state initiative designed for achieving grade-level reading for all of Alabama's public school students. The Alabama Reading Initiative advocates the use of research-based reading programs and materials.
Teachers at ARI schools receive extensive professional development concentrating on the five essential components of effective reading instruction:
- Phonemic Awareness - a student's ability to understand that words are made up of sounds
- Phonics - students learn the relationships between the letters of written language and spoken sounds
- Vocabulary - words a student needs to know in order to communicate orally and recognize words they see in print
- Fluency - a student's ability to read a text accurately and quickly
- Comprehension - a student's ability to understand what they have read
In addition, students' progress is monitored trough on-going assessment. Teachers implement small group instruction for each student's individual needs. Each ARI school has a school-based reading coach who provides on-going professional development at the school, works with struggling readers, and models effective reading instruction.
Fonde Elementary School will host a Reading Literacy Night where parents will have the opportunity to participate in teacher-led activities at reading stations that reflect the components of effective reading instruction. The date will be posted at a later time.
