What is Character Education, and why does it matter?

Once scorned as a burden on teachers, a usurpation of parental prerogative, or a foray into politics and religion, character education is now accepted as smart and necessary.  It just makes sense to teach young people right from wrong -- in the classroom, living room, and locker room.  After all, who does't want to be surrounded by good people, people we can trust to make decisions according to principle rather that expediency?  What are education, coaching, and child-rearing supposed to be about -- developing good people who can live healthy, happy lives of purpose or just clever people who can pass a ball or a test?

Diverse communities seeking a workable character-education model start by developing consensus on shared values -- values that are clear and unequivocal but do not trample on political, religious, racial/ethnic, socioeconomic or gender sensibilities.  The CHARACTER COUNTS! Youth education project has found that there are at least six such values that can and should be taught to all age groups (even adults).  These are known as the "Six Pillars of Character": trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

Here at Fonde, in the counseling classes, I strive to teach these traits to our students all year long through various lessons and activities.
